A San Francisco native, Niels studied with Alan Hall, in the lineage of renowned educator Alan Dawson. His own teaching experience has covered age groups from preschool through retirement; beginner to working professional.


He has played in a wide range of musical genres, collaborating with dancers, vocalists, and visual artists. Niels has performed/recorded with Mel Graves, John Allair(Van Morrison), Christopher Amberger(Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers), Jim Prescott(G-Love), Terry Haggerty, Loren Dempster(Merce Cunningham Dance Co.), The Church of John Coltrane, The Kunst-Stoff dancers and many others.


His recordings as drummer/percussionist on Gerald Beckett's 2004 and 2006 releases have received international airplay reaching 40th and 14th on jazz charts.


He was awarded scholarships to fund private study with composer/percussionist George Marsh, and study at Sonoma State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Music.


Current collaborations include Michael LaMacchia, Ken Cook, Edo Castro and Jeff Derby.
